FL Studio Tutorial: Using Channel Layers For Heavy Bass Sounds

This is a pretty simple tutorial and for many people this may be something you already know how to use.

However if you don't, read on as it can be useful. Using a layer channel will mean you can play several VSTs simultaneously. This can be particularly useful with bass sounds and can create a much thicker and fuller sound. This is great when producing dubstep for example as you can get a much heavier sound. It's not just bass this is useful for however use your imagination and combine different sounds.

The first step is to load up 3 different VSTs with different presets in the step sequencer, I'm using NI Massive. Then right click insert layer on another channel.

Now you need to set up the three VSTs as children of the layer. Click on Layer so you see channel settings then using shift select all 3 VSTs using the green lights then click "Set Children" on the Layer settings.
Now everything should be set up so that when you play a note when "Layer" is selected you should hear all 3 VSTs at the same time. The settings for layer also have a random option, check this and each time you play a note a different VST will play each time, which can be fun to experiment with.
